Note from Jo: Have it Your Way

On a recent family trip, we were at an airport and landed at a Burger King for flight food home. There was a young man in front of me, and we stood there together, in solidarity of needed fried foods and in a long line. I noticed he kept pulling out his phone and could hear him using Google translate “How do I say #6, no vegetables?” After the 6th time of me hearing Siri butcher it, I leaned in and, in Spanish, asked if he needed help ordering. We had about 10 people ahead of us, and I wanted him to feel prepped and secure in getting that order right. He smiled and said SI! I told him I’d order for him and to relax and sit back. His big grin reminded me of how my parents may have felt after they immigrated here in the 60s from Cuba and Argentina. They didn’t have a handy translator behind them, in front of them, or next to them. They did the best they could and got by.

We got to the front of the line, ordered, paid, and got food! Success! The young man turned to my husband twice and thanked him, and thanked me over and over. I got our happy meals and made a dash for the exit. My 7-year-old, Olivia, pulled me in and asked what that was about. I explained it to her, and her big brown eyes opened wide, and without hesitation, she said, “Mom, I am going to tell you two things right now. 1) I love you because you take me to fun places. 2) I love you more because you are always looking to see who you can help.” I laughed and smiled as we made our way to the gate. I thought about the other struggles the young man would have as his travel went on that day and hoped others could help him too.

I ask you to read this and do a few things.

  1. Always remember me when you see a Burger King. I dare you not to.

  2. Dig in; how can you help someone in need? Have you checked out our new PromoKitchen mentor program and platform? Is this a sign to be the good? Is this the sign to “Have it your way” while helping someone else?
