From Swag Fan to Certified Pro: Why TAS Training Just Makes Sense

New to the promo world? So was I. And if I could go back and hand myself one thing on Day One, it would be this certification.

Seven years ago, I stumbled into an industry I didn’t even know existed. Sure, I was obsessed with branded merch, but I never really thought about who made it or how it got to me. That changed when I started working for a company that mixed marketing with the thrill of online shopping… for swag.

Little did I know, I’d opened a door to a world I would fall in love with; one that goes way beyond just pens, tumblers, and t-shirts.

I hit the ground running, figuring things out on the fly and learning from colleagues along the way. But recently, I took a training course that made me stop and think: Wow, this is incredibly helpful… where was this when I started?

It’s not that I didn’t have tools back then, but this course had everything in one place — plus the context that helped me finally connect the dots. If you're new to the industry (or even just looking to sharpen your skills), this course could be a game-changer. And yes, there’s even a multi-level certification if you're planning to stick around for a while.

So, whether you're brand new or just need a refresher, this is a solid way to level up your career, invest in your skills, and get certified.

The Trained Advertising Specialist (TAS) Certificate

This certification is offered through PPAI (Promotional Products Association International), a global leader in the promotional products industry. It’s part of their Online Education portal, which includes tons of great content to help you sharpen your skills.

What made the TAS course so impactful wasn’t just the information itself — it was the why behind the how. It helped me understand the bigger picture of our industry. TAS is truly the 101 course for anyone getting started — and it’s the foundation if you plan to go even further.

Here’s why I think it’s perfect for industry newcomers:

✔️It covers the fundamentals

The TAS course dives into the essentials — the supply chain, buyer personas, and best practices for everyday tasks like pricing, artwork, and submitting orders correctly to supplier partners. (Honestly, I’m pretty sure some of our supplier friends would love if we all had a refresher on sending PO’s and art files. )

✔️It builds confidence

Instead of constantly feeling like you’re winging it, you’ll gain a clear understanding of how things work, and even pick up the insider lingo. There’s nothing cooler than casually asking, “What’s the MOQ, and do we qualify for EQP?”
👉And if you’re not a newbie and still don’t know what that means… consider this your sign to take the course!

✔️It gives you the big picture

The course connects all the dots like the who, what, when, where, why, and how. Plus, it offers elective tracks based on your role. As a new business owner, I chose the marketing track, and honestly, I could write another full blog just on what I learned from that section alone.

I’m grateful for everything I’ve learned over the years, but if I could rewind and start with this course, I absolutely would. If you’re reading this as a newcomer or you’re hiring someone new to the industry, invest in a program like this. It smooths out the learning curve and sets you (or your team) up for long-term success.

Huge thanks to PromoKitchen! I got access to these amazing resources because PK is a proud PPAI member, and because I’m an active volunteer “sous-chef.” WIN-WIN-WIN.

I’ll be sure to share more when I complete my Certified Advertising Specialist (CAS) and Master Advertising Specialist (MAS) certifications. It’s never too late to learn and grow.
